Dave Roberts Memorial Gaming Day
@ Stourbridge & District Wargames Club 21/06/25

Back in April my good friend
Dave, who I had known for 40 years, lost his battle with cancer.
Like myself Dave loved comics, Star Wars and gaming. We role-played
and played Star Wars Minis for many years.
This weekend we held a Memorial Gaming Day at our local Games Club.
Our game used mostly his Star Wars Minis, though we played using the
Xenos Rampant Rules.
As an added personal touch I added a command figures to each of the
Rebel Infantry squads that represented one of his Star Wars
Role-Playing characters.
The scenario was pretty much the Battle of Hoth, but as we had no
ice scenery we called it the planet Soth. The Empire had 10 turns to
try to destroy the Rebel Shield Generator, the Rebels simply needed
to hold out.
It was approx. 100pts each side with some added
special rules;
- The Shield Generator could not be targeted from more that 12" away
- The Imperials could afford to fail two activation rolls, the
Rebels three.
- Darth Vader (who was 16pts) does not take Courage tests. If he is
within charge range of Luke Skywalker he gains Wild Charge.
- Boba Fett, if he is withing charge range of Han solo he gains Wild
Charge. If Boba Fett loses close combat to Han Solo, Boba Fett is
instantly defeated.
- Rancor Monsters. At the start of each players Turn if they are
within 8" of an activating players unit roll for Wild Charge.
Rancors will only charge the activating players units, there is no
combat, the unit engaged by he Rancor instantly loses 1 Strength
Point. The Rancor Monsters cannot be attacked or damaged. Rancor
Monster will not Charge the AT-ATs (big & scary) or Snowspeeders
(flying).
- Snowspeeders. Tow Cable - If a Snowspeeder is within 3" of an
AT-At when it reduces the AT-AT to less than half hit points the
AT-AT is immediately defeated.
The game went pretty well, with the Rebels managing to destroy the
AT-AT's mainly due to the Spotter rule. Darth Vader did duel with
Luke Skywalker, Vader the victor, only for Han Solo to defeat Darth
Vader. The Rebel forces were decimated, only their Recon units (Han
Solo and Taun Taun's) and a half strength Artillery unit survived...
however the Imperials failed to destroy the Shield Generator in 10
Turns, the Rebel Transports were able to flee, victory for the Rebel
Alliance.
Game notes: The Spotter rule was a bit strong. Maybe limit the
Artillery units next time. Also we should have allowed the AT-ATs to
have Move & Fire as Free, or remove Slow. A couple of failed
activations meant they could not reach the Shield Generator. Rancors…
perfect, will use that rule for monsters again.
Overall it was a fun game, and one I hope Dave would have enjoyed.
Thank you Dave. May the Force be with you.
