An overall rating of 4
may seem a bit high for this small set, but it simply
comes down to playability. And quite frankly these
are some fun versions of our favourite Guardians of the
Galaxy.
Guardians of the Galaxy
First appearance: Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (January 1969)
The Guardians are active in the 31st century in an
alternative time-line of the Marvel Universe known as
Earth-691. The original members of the team include
Major Vance Astro (later known as Major Victory), an
astronaut from 20th century Earth who spends a thousand
years travelling to Alpha Centauri in suspended
animation. He is also the future alternative universe
counterpart of Vance Astrovik, the hero known as
Justice.
Other original team members are Martinex T'Naga, a
crystalline being from Pluto; Captain Charlie-27, a
soldier from Jupiter; and Yondu Udonta, a blue-skinned
"noble savage" from Centauri-IV (the fourth planet
orbiting the star Alpha Centauri B). Each is apparently
the last of their kind and they are forced to unite as a
team against the actions of the Badoon, an alien race
which attempts to conquer Earth's solar system.
In the aftermath of the Phalanx invasion of the Kree,
Star-Lord decides to form a team of interstellar heroes
that will be proactive in protecting the galaxy, rather
than reacting to crises as they happen. To this end, he
recruits Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora,
Phyla-Vell (the new Quasar), Rocket Raccoon, and Groot,
with Mantis as support staff. On the recommendation of
their ally, Nova, the group establishes a base of
operations on the space station Knowhere, which
possesses a teleportation system with near-universal
range.[34] An intelligent, telepathic dog named Cosmo
the Spacedog is Knowhere's chief of security and works
closely with the new team

Rocket
First appearance: Marvel Preview #7 (Summer 1976)
Rocket Raccoon was originally the "Guardian of the
Keystone Quadrant", an area of outer space sealed off
from the rest of the cosmos by the so-called Galacian
Wall. Rocket is captain of the starship Rack 'n' Ruin.
Later, Rocket Raccoon would be a member of the team
chosen to accompany Star-Lord on his mission to stop a
Phalanx infiltration of the Kree homeworld. At
culmination of the mission Star Lord asks Rocket to join
the Guardians of the Galaxy.
002
Groot
First appearance: Tales to Astonish #13 (November 1960)
(right) 009 Groot
- set: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY MOVIE
Groot is a Flora colossus from Planet X, the capital of
the branch worlds. The Flora colossi are tree-like
beings whose language is almost impossible to understand
due to the stiffness of their larynges, causing their
speech to sound like they are repeating the phrase "I am
Groot".
Groot is an extraterrestrial tree monster who initially
came to Earth seeking humans to capture and study. The
original Groot, and his later duplicates were destroyed.
A different Groot, believed to be the last of his kind
joined Star Lord and formed a bond with Rocket Raccoon.
Groot died on that mission, but re=grew from a surviving
twig to become a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
005
Drax
First appearance: The Invincible Iron Man #55 (February
1973)
While driving through a desert with his wife and
daughter, Arthur Douglas' car is attacked by a spaceship
piloted by Thanos, who thinks the humans have seen him.
His daughter, Heather, survives the crash and is adopted
by Thanos' father, Mentor, and raised on Titan. She
later becomes Moondragon.
Needing a champion to combat the threat from Thanos,
Mentor and the Titan god Kronos capture Douglas' spirit
and place it in a powerful new body. He is rechristened
"Drax the Destroyer", and his sole purpose is to kill
Thanos.
Alongside a multitude of other heroes, Drax helps battle
Thanos and Nebula for possession of the Infinity
Gauntlet. Drax is chosen by Adam Warlock to safeguard
the Power Gem as part of the Infinity Watch.
Later, Star-Lord would recruit Drax for the new
Guardians of the Galaxy.
006
Gamora
First appearance: Strange Tales #180 (June 1975)
Gamora is the last of her species, the Zen-Whoberis, who
were exterminated by the Badoon (in her original
timeline, her species was exterminated by the Universal
Church of Truth). Thanos found her as a child and
decided to use her as a weapon. Gamora was raised and
trained by Thanos to assassinate the Magus, an evil
alternate version of Adam Warlock.
Gamora was part of the
Infinity Watch, a team led by Adam Warlock to look after
the Infinity Gems. Most famously Gamora is a team
member of the Guardian of the Galaxy.
015
Nebula
First appearance: The Avengers #257 (July 1985)
A brutal space pirate and mercenary, Nebula seized
control of Sanctuary II, a massive spaceship previously
under the command of Thanos.
The newly resurrected Thanos was offended by Nebula's
claims of kinship. He reclaimed his ship and almost
kills her, using the Infinity Gems.
In the Guardians of the Galaxy film Nebula is one of the
children raised by Thanos alongside her adopted sister
Gamora. She is sent by Thanos alongside Gamora to assist
Ronan the Accuser in acquiring an orb containing the
Power Stone.
